So, I was up in New York for the weekend and serendipitously ended up being there at the same time Johnnie Walker was having a tasting of their brands and a presentation on the flavors in their stuff. I learned a few things that were really interesting and I took some photos.
Anyway, I think first and foremost, it’s safe to say my drink of choice is Johnnie Walker black label. But it was really interesting to go through the different labels and taste all of them side by side.
Red Label for me is kinda harsh. I’ll drink it, but it’s got a bite to it that I don’t find in any of the other blends, except maybe Green, which I learned is actually unlike the other blends because it doesn’t have grain whiskey as a base. it’s simply a blend of malts, which is why it tastes so much stronger than the rest to me, I’m assuming
Black label, still the love of my life
Gold label, which i’d had before was really tasty. They served it in frozen cups and suggested keeping the bottle in the freezer. It’s definitely the sweetest of the labels.
Green – the strongest of any of them. but they taught us a really cool trick for determining the flavor. putting a drop in your palm and them rubbing them together and sniffing the aroma. It worked really well. Totally doing that with single malts from now on.
Blue – It’s such a special drink. It’s funny. whenever I drink it, I feel as though I should hold it for a little while. really tasty stuff, but honestly, would still choose black over it, not just based on price.
They also had a bottle of Johnnie Walker 1805 on display that cost 27,000 dollars.
Overall the event was good. A lot of information. ideas on tasting, adding a drop of water to open up the flavors (similar to how air makes wine better). And they gave me an old fashioned made with black label. Although I think old fashions are a bit too sweet for me. I mean, really, what adult regularly puts maraschino cherries on anything (except manhattans, of course).
My business cards haven’t come in yet, so I’m reduced to drawing on myself.
1805. Who knew?
The bar!
Tasting tray. yes, that’s a free lapel pin and cigarette, I mean business card holder.
